Job Description:

The overall purpose of this position is to provide coordination with Host Nation Officials and offices to translate and resolve issues as required.



MAJOR JOB ACTIVITIES:

  1. Acts as linguist in support of the U.S. Military.
  2. Will act as liaison for any intra-military operations or issues as required to include coordinating participation of U.S. Government in annual Qatari Military sporting events.
  3. Coordinates with ASG and Host Nation Officials and offices as required, translating and resolving issues as they arise.
  4. Coordinates with S9 Officer to ensure mission requirements are fulfilled.
  5. Travel, extensive driving, will be required to official offices and remote sites. Interpreters will travel to classified sites, as needed, in order to provide translation support as part of S9 normal operations.
  6. Translates official documents, conversations, and correspondence both written and orally.
  7. Performs interpreting at meetings between U.S and Qatari officials.
  8. Provides linguist support for any training exercises with Qatari forces or Qatari medical personnel.
  9. Advises installation command and military personnel in contact with Qatari nationals on all cultural matters, customs and courtesies.
  10. Advises U.S. forces in contact with Qatari officials on all matters concerning the interpretation and implementation of government to government agreements between the U.S. and Qatar.
  11. Coordinate with Ministry of Interior/Qatari Military Police for resolving various security and traffic issues and provide translating services in support of the resolution of issues such as traffic tickets, accidents, leases and contracts.
  12. Interpreters will also provide administration support, which include the preparation of correspondence in order to support the successful completion of the S9’s administrative requirements as part of ASG-QA’s Command priorities.
  13. Assists tenant units and other Directorates and sections of ASG-QA with liaison support for matters that require Arabic translation services.
  14. Will act as a liaison for convoys, and assist in mission support.

MATERIAL & EQUIPMENT DIRECTLY USED:  

General office equipment and supplies, computer, cell phone, vehicle.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

This position works both indoors and out. During a large portion of the year this position will be exposed to extreme heat, sand and dust. Normal work week  is 40 hours, 5 days a week. Must be on-call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This position requires flexibility in work hours.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES:

Work environment is often fast paced and at times requires exposure to high heat and humidity and working at all hours.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:


Education/Certifications: Two years related experience may be substituted for one year of education, if degree is required.


College degreed preferred/High School diploma required. Driver’s license - required must be able to obtain Qatari driver’s license. 5 years of experience as Arabic linguist or Bachelor’s Degree in translation with 2 years of experience. US Citizen with a Secret Security Clearance is required.


Experience:


Incumbent must demonstrate a high degree of English comprehension, including speaking, understanding, reading, writing, and typing. Must be fluent in Arabic, Qatari dialect with a minimum of 5 years of experience in speaking, reading and writing. Must have an extensive knowledge of Qatari culture, religion, customs and laws as well as be familiar with Qatari military structure, customs and courtesies. Must have experience dealing with high ranking foreign officials and be able to interface at the executive level. Must have at least 5 years of experience acting as protocol adviser for civil and military affairs.


Skills:


Must be proficient in using Microsoft Office software both English and Arabic versions.

Interpersonal and communication skills are requirements of this position as there is constant interaction with military personnel.

Arabic language skills are required, should be native speaker or similar skill level.

Accustomed to dealing at executive level.

Prior military experience preferred.

SUPERVISORY/BUDGET RESPONSIBILITIES:


Able to react to change productively and handle essential tasks as assigned. Supervises no employees.
